Across the long years, who remembers the moment when rain slips past the ear?
Sitting on a chair, I lifted my head once more. People still crowded around me. Their mouths opened and closed, yet no one seemed to feel that I existed in this exact moment.
Everything around me has always felt close and distant at once. Even when my eyes catch it, it has already withdrawn into noise within seconds.
No new raindrops clung to the bookstore's glass wall. After the heavy rain clouds drifted away, I seemed to see the sun.
The rain began to fall silent, like a riddle.
Outside, as always after rain, moisture condensed in the air. It melted on the surface of my skin and stuck to me as if it belonged there.
I did not know whether the next step should turn left or right. In this city built beside office towers, I avoided the eyes around me and quickened my pace out of fear for steel and concrete.
Pedestrians and electric bikes pressed through the same road. Every bead of water on the branches fought to fall, passed through the crowd, and seeped into the earth.
I could not dodge one of them. It attached itself to my hair, innocently treating my body as a fearless cradle. Was it afraid? I wanted to know.
The stairs into the metro stacked downward, layer after layer, until I could not see their end. Footsteps fell beside my ears, one pile after another, hesitant and dull, forcing me to follow.
On those steps, I did not know where each step was taking me. Each time my foot landed, the ground seemed to bounce me upward and set me down again.
I used all my strength to stand steady and begged myself not to fall.
At security, I smiled instinctively at the guard, signaling that the canvas bag on my shoulder did not wish to be dropped onto the heavy conveyor belt.
But no one stopped. They passed the gates and were delivered by the metro to every corner of the city.
The dampness on my body deepened, though I could not feel a single drop of sweat. Perhaps they had escaped silently.
The humid air gathered into a net and covered me. The surrounding noise withdrew, far away, as if separated by a thick fog.
On the platform, faces blurred. I could not recognize a single one. Their pupils held only the reflection of electronic screens.
No one looked at me. But I never looked away.
The lights in the train flickered, struggling and crying as if they might go out at any second.
The dampness grew more obvious, an innate discomfort, like a tide overflowing from the heart, passing through every blood vessel and surging outward from beneath the skin. I looked down at my hands; the fingertips had turned pale, wrinkled as if soaked for too long. I touched my forehead without thinking.
The air lost its warmth and became cold. My hair seemed soaked too, not with sweat, but with a heavier moisture that could not be driven away.
I realized something was wrong. A train entered slowly, brakes tearing through the air. Yet no one got off. Every seat was empty, as if this train did not belong to the city I knew.
I hesitated, then followed the crowd into the carriage. The doors closed heavily behind me, with a click that seemed to lock away something unnamed.
The train moved. I gripped the cold pole and looked into the tunnel. The walls stretched; lights flashed; the darkness outside seemed conscious, twisting and crawling like the eyes of ghosts.
The space inside the carriage changed. Seats lost their order. Some grew long and narrow, others shrank into almost invisible slits. Though I sat still, the carriage seemed to extend endlessly, pulling the seats opposite into a distance I could no longer see.
Where was that, and where was I?
Then came the low sound of dripping. Water seemed to seep from the ceiling. I looked up and saw it bending downward, not physically, but through a visual distortion, as though an invisible black hole were dragging the top of the carriage into another dimension.
The dripping quickened. My feet grew wet. A shallow layer of water covered the floor and flowed toward the end of the carriage.
The water was black as ink, swallowing light. I jumped up to avoid it, slipped, and fell onto the wet floor.
The water was freezing. I tried to stand, but the other passengers did not react. They stared at their screens, soaked and motionless, imprisoned by some invisible force.
The water rose to my knees. It pressed from all sides with a heavy force. My steps grew slower, the water colder, ice patterns forming on its surface. The walls blurred and receded; the black hole of the ceiling seemed ready to swallow the whole space.
A low voice came from the water, like someone murmuring underwater. I looked down and saw countless distorted shadows floating there, faceless outlines struggling for release.
I wanted to scream, but the sound was trapped in my throat. The rain had never stopped.
The broadcast crackled: "Next stop... terminal station..." The voice came from a remote corner of nowhere.
Ahead, the tunnel mouth was being consumed by darkness. There was no end, only void. I knew I could no longer escape this rain-flooded carriage.
My strength drained away. My body was pulled beneath the water; coldness filled my nose and mouth; my vision blurred.
Darkness spread before my eyes. My body dissolved into endless droplets, becoming a remnant of the city.
And the metro continued silently toward an unknown terminal. Who would still remember me?
Rain fell from my eyes.
I, too, became rain.

Personne ne me regarde.
L'eau monte jusqu'a mes genoux.
