In most of my memories, black and white were always said to symbolize death and disappearance. Beyond artistic expression, I encountered them most often in portraits of the departed. Once a vivid life and a many-coloured world have fallen completely still, fire carries away the body: one part becomes faint ash drifting with smoke and cloud; another remains as pale dust, placed in a small wooden box and buried in the earth.
The dead are gone, their final traces in this world fading away. Colour is withdrawn, and black and white are left to speak of the reverence and grief of those who remain.
If that is so, what of memory? Life is brief and the years flow like water. If we stop recalling and gradually forget, does the past truly cease to exist? Does a private blank appear somewhere on the timeline?
As human beings, perhaps we cannot actively erase what has happened. If we could freely clear away feeling and intention, how would we differ from numb electronic machinery? Even then, we might still grieve over the missing experience.
In the end, every fragment may bring pain or leave a scar. Perhaps it has not disappeared at all; choosing to forget may simply be our answer to the sorrow carried by remembrance.
Looking across the lake and woods from a quiet pavilion in the sun, I feel a transparent wall dividing reality from the past. People pass and occasionally cast a glance, yet no one else enters this private world to share it with me. Thought rises with the wind and floats like a fish. Beneath the warm sun, emotion becomes a small boat lifted by the breeze, making white waves before returning, after many turns, to the rivers and seas from which it came.
Balancing reality and memory is always a matter of borrowing from one wall to mend another. Life holds much suffering and little happiness. I want to record beautiful moments, yet cannot perform the celebrated ease of others; instead I keep questioning empty appearances. Beneath the wish for simplicity lies a longing for freedom, forever wrestling with the noise around me. My mind dreams of mountains, lakes and the beauty of sentences, but the explosion of information drags the senses into a desert until all I can do is sigh at the confusion of time.
On an evening bus, red, white and yellow lights circulate through the streets, drawing layer after layer of shadow across my eyes. I open my hands; moonlight falls through my fingers and onto the crowd, illuminating the arriving footsteps. In a million ways, they declare the impermanence of day and night.
The amber streetlamp needs no company. It stands through rain and sunlight, travelling thousands of miles through the universe with each rotation of the earth. A life might be such a light. If someone pauses for you, no explanation is needed: perhaps your glow will illuminate her. If she must leave, do not step forward; watch until her shadow lengthens and the sky grows bright. Light and warmth eventually confess the direction of every relationship.
When the light has vanished and the night has truly grown long, perhaps only then will my eyes fail to face what is before them. And what of it? At least it happened. Even when the memory of the previous second fades, the heart will colour its fragments anew. Meaning tells me that, however many times it is redrawn, memory will remain itself. Even if you are no longer as you were, may you remember the shape of the past.
Only then did I understand that black and white, too, are brilliant colours. This is how I choose to regard memory.
