The rhythm in my headphones flows like water, like tears, through the steel bones of the city, cool and damp. I stand on a pedestrian bridge beneath silent starlight while traffic roars like a sea below, ready to swallow me. Earth and sky are two crossed strings, each playing its own key, unaware of harmony or where feeling runs deepest.
In the distance, towers stand like sleeping giants. They look down on the city and watch ten thousand lights slide away, permitting everything to happen without a word. When the wind rises, I pull my coat tight, as if I could sew a wandering child into the cloth and hide the confusion inside. What is drifting? It is light yet unbearably heavy, empty yet leaving no space. Longing passes through my arms like wind, leaving a cold mark without revealing where it came from or where it goes.
I ask myself what solitude is: an extinguished lamp in a long night, or a few words on a screen that failed to hold your gaze? Its clothing is graceful but folded to conceal soft wounds. Is the noise of the city not a masked ball of loneliness? Everyone dances, yet among the rainlike footsteps no one takes your hand.
The cars beneath the bridge are countless tired hearts, pushed and crowded around towers toward an unknown distance. I keep looking back in my mind: the river of my hometown winding past the old pagoda. The pagoda says nothing, but has watched me grow with calm and kindly eyes. As long as it remains, my hometown remains, and my home can drift after me with the clouds.
Home and hometown: two words that pull my thoughts into a long thread. I once wanted so badly to escape that small city, its ordinary streets and the torn papers in my school desk. Yet in a strange city I remember its mottled walls and slow river again and again. Why flee, and why wish to return? The future deceives the past; lies fail to hide themselves. I should have ended this play before it began.
The sea breeze comes and I stop. Heart, go on: cross the sleeping trees and birds, skim the lonely fish by the lake, and land at the familiar foot of the mountain, at my blue-brick, red-tiled school. Youth was a dawn dream that vanished on waking, yet returns on countless later nights. If I could live it again, I would walk those years once more and reread the diary of my younger self. Her thin wings wanted love and feared injury. Now I only want to hold that child and tell her: everything will be all right; do not be sad.
When the traffic thins, I rub the shine from my eyes and leave the bridge. My numb body drags its tired sorrow through watery night light. On the empty street I finally lower my guard and let my steps dance. Yet I still look around, needing to know this vision is not a dream but an unreachable reality, and that the person growing indistinct is me.
I open and close my phone. On the polished surface of a social app, I write a message, but the send button grows heavier the longer I stare. It remains a draft, a secret left in the night. By morning it will vanish like a dream. At the corner, a small bar glows amber. Its door is half open; a wind chime disturbs the stillness. The cool night will not let me pass, so I push the wooden door.
The air holds malt and quiet jazz. Light falls reluctantly across every face, like a silent girl's hand brushing the world's dust from the skin until the soul almost appears. By the window, rhythm returns to my mind. Neon on rain-washed glass dissolves into tender colour; the drink ripples, and my thoughts spread with it, flowing toward the distant river and telling how long the night fields are.
